What the Flux WDT Does
The Flux is a motorized WDT tool made to break up clumps in espresso grounds and create a more even coffee bed. According to Subminimal, it begins with a high-speed spin to disperse clumps, then automatically finishes with a slower spin to smooth and level the surface.
Fast mode: 600 RPM or 800 RPM while holding the touch button
Slow finish mode: 350 RPM for about 4 seconds after release
Rechargeable: USB-C charging with a replaceable internal battery
Adjustable needles: Straight for precision or fanned out for wider coverage
Storage options: Horizontal tray or vertical magnetic wall mount
Quick Start Guide
Charge first: Fully charge the Flux via USB-C before first use.
Install the needles: Remove the magnetic cap, insert the included needles into the slots, and adjust the spread to suit your workflow.
Distribute the coffee: Place the needles into the portafilter basket all the way to the bottom, hold the top touch button to spin at high speed, then release to let the automatic slow finish run for about 4 seconds.
Store safely: Lay it flat on the tray or mount it vertically on the included magnetic wall mount.
How the Controls Work
The Flux uses a one-button interface:
Hold the button: Starts high-speed spinning for clump breakup.
Release the button: Triggers the automatic slow-speed finish for leveling.
Change the high-speed setting: With Flux stopped, tap the top touch button 5 times and hold on the 5th tap. Wait a few seconds until the speed changes, then release to save the setting.
Why It Helps Espresso Quality
Good distribution matters because uneven grounds can create low-density paths in the puck, leading to channeling. By helping break clumps and level the bed, Flux supports more even water flow through the coffee puck. The result can be improved shot consistency, better extraction, and fewer frustrating pulls.
Subminimal notes that the combination of fast clump-busting followed by a gentle slow spin is intended to leave the basket tidy and ready for tamping.
Needle Setup and Stance
One useful feature of Flux is the ability to alter the needle spread. You can keep the needles straight for tight, precise circles or fan them out for broader coverage. This makes it easier to adapt the tool to different basket sizes and workflow preferences.
Straight needles: Best for narrow, precise coverage.
Fanned needles: Better for wider distribution and broader baskets.

Maintenance and Cleaning
To keep the Flux in good condition, clean it gently with a slightly damp cloth. Wipe the body and needles as needed, but do not submerge the unit or wash it under running water, since it is not waterproof.
If a needle becomes damaged, remove the magnetic cap and replace the affected needle(s) with the spare set included in the package.
Storage and Everyday Use
Flux is designed to fit neatly into a coffee workflow. You can store it horizontally on the tray or mount it vertically to save counter space. The included magnetic system makes it easy to swap, adjust, or remove needles quickly.
Needle Spacing and Speed Tip
A helpful workflow note: narrow needle spacing generally pairs best with the faster speed setting, while spread or wide needle spacing works better with the slower speed setting to reduce spraying and mess.
